Yogic Wisdom offers post graduate diploma in yoga therapy for first time in Hunter
BOOLAROO’S Yogic Wisdom will be the first yoga practice in the Hunter – and only the seventh nationwide – to offer a post graduate diploma in yoga therapy.
Yoga therapist and Yogic Wisdom owner Kym McDonald said the two-year, Yoga Australia-accredited diploma would begin in February, 2018, and was tailored for yoga teachers or health professionals seeking to operate more holistic practices. Ms McDonald said yoga therapy combined tools including simple movements, breathing techniques, sound, relaxation and meditation techniques, dietary advice, lifestyle counselling and self-development guidelines
“Yoga therapy works with all other health modalities, to get the best, holistic outcome for a person,” she said.
Ms McDonald said she had clients with a range of ailments or medical conditions, ranging from Parkinson’s disease to depression, and as a yoga therapist was “empowered to accept that person into my class and tailor the class to help them there and at home”.
Ms McDonald said Newcastle was becoming an education hub for yoga: “When I studied yoga, I had to drive back and forth to Sydney but now we don’t have to do that, we are growing the talent we have here and in the wider Hunter area.”
At 42, she shut her business and completed a diploma in yoga, gained a yoga therapy post graduate diploma, a certificate four in Ayurveda Medicine and a certificate in workplace coaching and frontline management. She is the NSW representative for Yoga Australia.
Yogic Wisdom focuses on authentic yoga from her classical Hatha yoga training: “It is about the mind and body, not getting hot and sweaty to look good,” she says.
An information night on the yoga therapy course will be held at Yogic Wisdom on September 21.
